Helena Swatton produced a new audio visual artwork that was premiered at Spottee's Cave during Sunderland's Waterfront Festival, Saturday 25th June - Sunday 26th June 2005 (12 noon - 5pm).
It responds to the environment, history and location of 'Spottee's cave' (a well known local site, believed to have previously been the home of a hermit) where the work will also be shown.
It takes as its theme, notions of the 'outsider' and hints at a contemporary context.
This thought provoking artwork asks the viewer to consider the 'dynamic of fear and suspicion', or the space between the 'crowd' and the 'individual'. The title 'ROAR' refers to the well known footballing crowd's 'Roker Roar' as well as the nationally recognised acronym 'R.O.A.R.' (Right Of Admission Reserved).
The work was commissioned by ISIS Arts, Newcastle Upon Tyne and Sunderland City Council.
Helena Swatton has exhibited nationally and internationally, and lives and works in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
