We welcome Jon Winet, Peter Likarish and Molly Gallentine to Newcastle.

The team of new media artists and writers are busy in full-tilt pre-production on “Tyneside Novel,” a Twitter-based fiction work to be created over a three-day period, June 13-15, 2012 by a soon-to-be-formed worldwide community of writers.

“Tyneside Novel” will launch at 10 a.m. [BST] with characters traveling by train from Edinburgh to Newcastle. This plot line, expected to be one of many, is inspired in part by Mike Hodges’ brilliant 1971 film noir “Get Carter.” Like the film, Newcastle’s compelling social and physical cityscapes are projected to play starring roles in the narrative.Writers working locally and across the Twitterverse are invited to contribute to the project, using the hashtag #TyneNovel. Twitter allows for video and photography, so multimedia is expected to be an integral element of the work. The team anticipates with relish the surprises and plot turns Tyneside Novel promises to deliver.

The project is part of ongoing experimental creative writing, and research on the evolution of text and community in electronic space.Based in Iowa City and New York in the United States, the team have traveled to  Newcastle to work on site where New Writing North and ISIS Arts, are helping produce the project. Tyneside Cinema in the heart of Newcastle will provide hang-out|work space for participants wishing to work in close proximity and/or collaboratively. Details on work sessions, and related project updates will be available on the project’s website.

The team will present a short paper focusing their 2011 project, “Novel Iowa City,” at the June 13-15, 2012 Designing Interactive Systems Conference in Newcastle. Tyneside Novel work will be produced over the length of the conference.
