The Middleton Mystery computer game

Isis Arts and English Heritage developed a project based at Belsay Hall in Northumberland designed to enhance the site's appeal to young people and increase historical understanding and enjoyment. The project ran alongside Picture House, an exhibition of contemporary art, film and design. It involved a group of students at risk of exclusion from mainstream education who devised a computer game with the help of Steve Manthorp, a professional artist and Lateral Visions, a games production company. After a number of sessions spent exploring the history of the site, the young people developed characters and interactive scenarios that were translated into puzzles to be solved as part of the Middleton Mystery. A launch at Belsay Hall in July 2007 preceded a period of evaluation whereby games players who had downloaded the game were invited to suggest improvements. The game is currently downloadable at www.middletonmystery.co.uk and is for sale at the shop at Belsay Hall.
