Dignity of Difference

Multi-media artist Francis Gomila was Artist in Residence at ISIS Arts and Walker Technology College, Newcastle. Dignity of Difference was a citywide series of education and community projects leading up to Holocaust Memorial Day in January 2007, when Newcastle provided the national focus for events taking place around the country.

Francis worked with four groups of students to produce a number of art works that enable students to explore the theme of identity with particular reference to the Nazi Holocaust. Students used digital photography to produce a series of images that appear in three projected pieces. In addition, an interactive DVD was produced showing a split page picture book of eyes, noses and mouths.

Tyneview Primary School in Walker was also involved in the project. Sixth form students joined Francis at the school, assisting with photography and face painting. A choir of pupils from Tyneview sang and recorded 'Mad World' as the soundtrack to one of the projected artworks.

The art works were shown as part of a Holocaust Memorial event that inspired the theme 'Dignity of Difference.'
