While in residence Christian Bermudez will be working on a new project called Ballast Hill which will focus on the environmental landscape of Newcastle and how it has been drastically shaped and influenced by the coal and shipping industry of the past. Christian's work will span the fields of art and botany, he will attempt to map exotic plants that arrived to Newcastle's port by ballast in cargo ships during previous centuries, exploring this mobility as a metaphor for current migration movements.
"It is my main goal to create a map, a contemporary image of Newcastle throughout its flora, and history, as a metaphor of the city and its inhabitants."
